The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Pilates: What to Expect In Your First Reformer Class

August 6, 2025 diana wrobel
first beginner reformer class

Learn exactly what to expect in your first reformer class—what to wear, beginner-friendly exercises, and how Pilates strengthens your core and posture.

If you’re thinking about trying Pilates for the first time—Welcome! Whether your goal is to strengthen your core, improve posture, relieve pain, or simply move with more ease and confidence, Pilates can transform how you feel in your body.

As a Pilates instructor with over 25 years of experience, I know stepping into your first class can feel a little intimidating. What should you wear? What’s a Reformer? Will you be able to keep up? This guide is designed to answer all your questions, ease any nerves, and help you walk into your first session feeling prepared and excited.

⸻

What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a full-body exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It focuses on:

    •    Core Strength – Building stability from your center

    •    Alignment – Improving posture and reducing imbalances

    •    Flexibility – Increasing range of motion without strain

    •    Mind-Body Connection – Moving with precision and breath control

Unlike high-impact workouts, Pilates is gentle on the joints yet incredibly effective for toning muscles and improving functional movement. Whether you’re 18 or 93, Pilates can be adapted to your body and fitness level.

⸻

Choosing Your First Reformer Class

    •    Reformer Classes: Use a specialized machine with springs and pulleys to add resistance. It might look intimidating, but it’s beginner-friendly and provides great support for learning movements safely.

We offer multiple options to get started taking group reformer classes. If you’re unsure which option to choose, please ask us and we can help you decide which option is best depending on whether there is a time or financial pain point.

⸻

What to Wear

Comfort and mobility are key.

    •    Clothing: Form-fitting workout wear (leggings, tank tops, fitted T-shirts). Avoid baggy clothes so your instructor can see your alignment.

    •    Shoes: Pilates is usually done with full foot exercisae grip socks to prevent slipping and maintaining cleanliness in the studio.

    •    Accessories: No need to bring much—just a water bottle, a sweat towel and our studio will provide mats and equipment

What to Expect When You Arrive:

    1.    Studio Tour: You’ll be welcomed and shown where to store your belongings, change, and get set up.

    2.    Health History: Your instructor will ask about any injuries, health conditions, or goals so they can personalize your experience.

    3.    Equipment Introduction: If you’re using a Reformer or other apparatus, we’ll explain how it works before class begins.

    4.    Warm-Up: Classes typically start with gentle breathing and mobility exercises to prepare your body.

⸻

The Flow of a Beginner (Essential Class) Pilates Class

    1.    Centering and Breathwork – Learning how to engage your core and use your pilates breath to support movement.

    2.    Basic Movements – Simple but effective exercises that target your core, hips, glutes, shoulders, and spine.

    3.    Controlled Transitions – Pilates focuses on precision, so movements are deliberate and smooth.

    4.    Stretch and Cool Down – Every class ends with flexibility work to leave you feeling relaxed and elongated.

💡 Tip: Don’t worry about keeping up—Pilates is not a competition. The instructor will give modifications if anything feels too challenging.

⸻

Beginner-Friendly Exercises You Might Experience in Class

    •    Pelvic Tilt (also called Imprint) – Awakens your spine and strengthens your glutes.

    •    Hundred (modified) – Builds core strength and endurance.

    •    Leg Circles – Improves hip mobility and stability.

    •    Spine Stretch Forward – Promotes flexibility and posture.

These exercises form the foundation of Pilates and are safe for most beginners.

⸻

How Pilates Feels (During and After Class)

    •    During Class: You’ll feel muscles you didn’t know you had, but without the high-intensity burn of traditional workouts. Expect a lot of focus on small, precise movements.

    •    After Class: Many beginners say they feel taller, lighter, and more connected to their body. You may experience mild soreness the next day—that’s your muscles waking up!

⸻

Common Fears (and Why You Don’t Need Them)

    •    “I’m not flexible enough.” Pilates builds flexibility—no prerequisites required. The whole point of doing pilates and as a result is to become more flexible. No one is judging your amount of flexibility.

    •    “I’ll be the only beginner.” Most classes include mixed levels, and instructors adapt exercises for everyone. We also have a slower beginner paced class call Essential Restorative Reformer Class.

    •    “The equipment looks scary.” The Reformer is designed to support your body, making exercises safer and easier to learn. As you work on the equipment and understand how to use it, it then feels more user friendly.

    •    “I’m too old or out of shape.” Pilates is low-impact and safe for all ages and fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries.

•    “I’m nervous about fitting in.” Our studio is diverse and inclusive and our clients are kind and welcoming to everyone especially new students. Our main focus is pilates and community.

⸻

Benefits You’ll Notice as a Beginner

    1.    Improved posture and awareness of body alignment

    2.    Stronger core and better stability

    3.    Increased flexibility and joint mobility

    4.    Enhanced mind-body connection (less stress, better focus)

    5.    Functional strength that helps in daily activities

With consistent practice (2–3 times a week), many clients start noticing changes in as little as 4–6 weeks. But the key word is consistent especially in the beginning when you’re learning the teachnique.

⸻

Pilates Etiquette for First-Timers

    •    Arrive 10 minutes early to get comfortable.

    •    Silence your phone to stay present.

    •    Listen to your body and don’t push through pain. Let the instructor know if you do have discomfort immediately.

    •    Ask questions—good instructors love helping beginners feel confident.

⸻

How to Prepare for Your First Class

    •    Hydrate throughout the day (but avoid a heavy meal right before). You can eat some yogurt or fruit before.

    •    Wear grip socks. They are also available for purchase in the studio.

    •    Let your instructor know if you have any health concerns.

    •    Keep an open mind—every movement is an opportunity to learn about your body.

⸻

Your Next Steps After Class

    1.    Assess how you feel: Notice any changes in posture, breathing, or stress levels.

    2.    Schedule your next session: Consistency is key to seeing results.

    3.    Explore different class types: Try the different specialty classes to discover what you love.

    4.    Set a goal: Whether it’s better posture, injury recovery, or strength, having a target keeps you motivated.
